A family-owned business situated in the heart of the rolling Kildare countryside this specialist propagation nursery was founded in 1986 by brothers Laurence and Kieran Dunne. The business has steadily grown to an annual production total of 1.5 million plants (mainly shrubby species as plugs and liners) and a loyal customer base comprised of garden centres and nurseries in Ireland, the UK, Italy and Holland. The nursery facility extends to 15 acres with 1.25 acres of multi-span glass houses and 3 acres of pol tunnels.
The standards of excellence in production and customer service achieved by L & K Dunne Nurseries since its foundation have been formally recognised by the industry many times over. This has come in the shape of trade awards (including Bord Bia Nursery Business of the Year 2009 and Bord Bia People Management Award 2009), and board appointments (Kieran Dunne as a former chairman of the Kildare Growers Group, as one of the horticulture sector’s representatives on the main board of Bord Bia and as chairman of the horticulture board, and also chairman and a founding member of the newly established Horticulture Action Group.)
One of the nurseries notable achievement has been the propagation and development of Cistus ‘Little Miss Sunshine’ (which is protected by Plant Breeders Rights) which has gone on to win several industry awards including Best New Plant at the Kildare Growers Show 2009 and a silver medal at Plantarium 2010.
Hypericum ‘Little Misstery’ has also brought the Nursery great success and won many awards such as ‘The Best New Plant’ at GLAS 2012.
L & K Dunne Nurseries now supply many of the top Irish nurseries including Rentes, Glenbrook, Flannery’s, Woodstock, Young’s, Dundrum and Abbey Nurseries. Rigorous quality control and process management ensure that plants are true to type, of an even grade, pest, disease and weed free and are delivered on time.
Use of Growmaster software allows for comprehensive daily monitoring of every crop, tracking all phases of production as well as delivery, invoicing and credit control. Varieties, quantities, dates and locations are decided each year by early spring and then fed into Growmaster. From this propagation schedules are set up for each week with the varieties, pot size, location and labels all detailed. This increased efficiency can be measured not just in terms of increased productivity but also against industry standards through annual audits as part of the Bord Bia Nursery Quality Programme. Every year that score has steadily increased to the point where it is now at 94.6% with the target still being 100%.
Further efforts to increase efficiency and productivity have resulted in heavy investment in modern production methods including the use of a Ellegaard Plug-It machine which can produce approximately 7,000 plugs in an hour and a Super Javo Potting machine which can process 3,500-4,000 of the 9cm liners per hour.
L & K Dunne Nurseries has also been a proud sponsor of Bloom In The Park, and have entered many award-winning gardens. These include ‘Metamorphosis’, designed by Anthony Ryan in 2009, ‘Jack And Jill Garden’, Designed By Anthony Ryan in 2013, ‘Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin Garden’ Designed By Anthony Ryan & Kieran Dunne in 2014, but in particular ‘Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin Garden’ Designed By Anthony Ryan & Kieran Dunne in 2015 which won the gold medal in the large garden category at Bloom In The Park.
